The eyes are designed to take in light, change that energy, and then relay that information to the brain for interpretation. That does not mean the eyes aren't damaged by light. Harmful UV rays wreck havoc on the tissues within the eye and damages the inter-ocular lens, hence cataracts. However, cataracts are not the only concern. Sunglasses are a way to prevent damage, just like sunscreen for the skin, good sunglasses will protect your eyes.
